Celebrating London’s diversity on the big stage.

Black on the Square.

OUTDOOR EVENT PRODUCTION FOR THE GLA

In support of the Mayor of London’s call to create a new event in the capital to celebrate the rich diversity of London’s Black culture and creativity, Heart were tasked as the creative production agency to produce and bring to life ‘Black on the Square’.

The Brief.

Hosted in London’s iconic Trafalgar Square on 2 September 2023, Heart worked hand in hand with a Community Advisory Group and the Greater London Authority (GLA) to deliver the first of its kind event.

Over 15,000 people took part, immersing themselves in the vitality and originality of London’s Black culture, enjoying food, music, spoken word and dance performances. The eclectic music line-up included everything from rap to soul and jazz, featuring DJ sets and live music from artists like MOBO Unsung, Touching Bass, Shortee Blitz, Enny and rappers BXKS – plus freestyle raps from Spit Game UK - all hosted by Rinse FM’s Goldie Quaker.

The Solution.

To the add to the culturally rich line up, gallery artwork totems were created to feature Jennie Baptsite exhibits – which explore the Black British experience through the lens of photography. Documentaries and films were also showcased from names like Aliyah Hasinah and Rakiya Hasan.

Heart individually engaged over 20 traders, providing visitors with the opportunity to enjoy fine food and drink and browse a plethora of stalls, from art and culture to books and accessories, to face painting and live screen printing.

The successful reception to Black on Square has resulted in it being put back into planning for subsequent years, creating a legacy cultural event for years to come.
